‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abd Allah related to us: Ibrahim ibn Sa‘d related to us, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Yahya ibn Sa‘id ibn al-‘As informed me that Sa‘id ibn al-‘As told him that ‘Uthman and ‘A’ishah related to him that Abu Bakr asked permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, while he was reclining on ‘A’ishah’s bed, wearing ‘A’ishah’s wrap. He gave Abu Bakr permission to enter while he was in that state. Abu Bakr told him what he needed, then left. Then ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, asked permission, and the Prophet gave him permission while still in that state. ‘Umar told him what he needed, then left. ‘Uthman said: Then I asked permission to enter. The Prophet sat up and said to ‘A’ishah, “Gather your clothes around you.” I told him what I needed, then left. ‘A’ishah said, “Messenger of Allah, I did not see you rouse yourself for Abu Bakr and ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with them, as you did for ‘Uthman.” The Messenger of Allah said, “‘Uthman is a very modest man, and I feared that if I gave him permission to enter while I was in that state, he would not be able to tell me what he needed.”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic identifies ‘Uthman and ‘A’ishah as transmitters to Sa‘id ibn al-‘As, and retains the full chain through Ibn Shihab.

  • The term مِرْط is a wrap or outer garment; the Arabic says the Prophet was wearing ‘A’ishah’s.

فزعت suggests rousing or hastening to respond; the exact nuance of ‘A’ishah’s observation is not fully explicit.

Does “rouse yourself for” best preserve the contrast in the Arabic?
