Abu al-Rabi‘ related to us: Isma‘il told me: Muhammad ibn Abi Harmalah told me, from ‘Ata’, Sulayman ibn Yasar, and Abu Salamah ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, that ‘A’ishah said: The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, was reclining in my room with his thigh—or his shins—uncovered. Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, asked permission to enter, and the Prophet gave him permission while remaining as he was; they spoke. Then ‘Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, asked permission, and the Prophet gave him permission in the same state; then they spoke. Then ‘Uthman, may Allah be pleased with him, asked permission. The Prophet sat up and adjusted his clothes. Muhammad said: I do not say that this all happened on one day. ‘Uthman entered and they spoke. When he left, I said, “Messenger of Allah, Abu Bakr entered and you did not smile or take notice of him; then ‘Umar entered and you did not smile or take notice of him; then ‘Uthman entered, and you sat up and adjusted your clothes.” He replied, “Should I not feel modest before a man before whom the angels feel modest?”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic preserves a variant: the Prophet’s thigh or shins were uncovered. Muhammad adds that he is not claiming all these events happened on one day; this transmitter comment is included.

  • The expression فلم تهش ولم تباله is rendered “did not smile or take notice of him,” preserving the contrast with sitting up for ‘Uthman.

  • كَاشِفًا عَنْ فَخِذِهِ أَوْ سَاقَيْهِ،

The Arabic itself gives two alternatives: his thigh or his shins.

Should both textual alternatives be retained? They are retained here.

  • قَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ‏:‏ وَلاَ أَقُولُ فِي يَوْمٍ وَاحِدٍ،

The source English omits a transmitter’s clarification included in Arabic.

No question; the transmitter comment is included.
