Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Musa ibn Isma‘il narrated to us. He said: Abd Allah ibn Hassan al-Anbari narrated to us. He said: Hiban ibn Asim narrated to us—and Harmala was the father of his mother. Safiyya daughter of Ulaiyya and Duhayba daughter of Ulaiyya narrated to me; their grandfather was Harmala, the father of their father, who informed them from Harmala ibn Abd Allah. He said: I went until I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and stayed with him until the Prophet recognized me. When he departed, I said to myself: ‘By Allah, I will go to the Prophet so that I may gain more knowledge.’ I came walking until I stood before him and said, ‘What do you command me to do?’ He said, ‘Harmala, do what is good and avoid what is wrong.’ I then went back until I reached my mount. Then I came forward again until I stood near him where I had been before, and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, what do you command me to do?’ He said, ‘Harmala, do what is good and avoid what is wrong. Consider what you would be pleased to hear people say to you when you leave them, and do that; and consider what you would dislike people saying to you when you leave them, and avoid it.’ When I returned, I reflected, and found that these two instructions left nothing out.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source gives two kinship explanations involving Harmala, but the pronoun antecedents in the chain are not fully clear in the compressed wording; the relationships are translated literally without resolving them.

  • The closing ‘these two’ refers to doing good and avoiding wrong, as repeated in the report.

The compressed chain gives multiple kinship statements and pronouns whose antecedents are difficult to determine from the wording alone.

Should a specialist review clarify these genealogical links, or should the literal chain remain as translated?

The source says ‘these two’ without restating the referents; they appear to be doing good and avoiding wrong.

Should this contextual reference remain explicit in a later version?
