Ishaq ibn Makhlad narrated to us, from Hammad ibn Usama, from Mis‘ar, who said: ‘Umar ibn Qays narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Abi Qurra al-Kindi, who said: My father offered his sister in marriage to Salman, but he refused and married a freedwoman belonging to him, named Buqayra. Abu Qurra heard that there had been some disagreement between Hudhayfa and Salman, so he went to find him. He was told that Salman was in his vegetable garden, so he set out to him. He met him carrying a basket containing greens; he had threaded his staff through the basket’s handle, and it was on his shoulder. Abu Qurra said, “Abu ‘Abd Allah, what happened between you and Hudhayfa?” Salman replied, “Man has always been hasty.” They went on until they reached Salman’s house. Salman entered and said, “Peace be upon you,” then gave Abu Qurra permission to enter. There was a patterned rug laid near a doorway, with some bricks by its head, and there was also a qurtat. Salman said, “Sit on your freedwoman’s bedding, which she lays out for herself.” Then he began telling him: “Hudhayfa used to relate things that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, would say in anger about certain people. Then I would be brought and asked about them, and I would say, ‘Hudhayfa knows best what he says, and I dislike there being resentments among people.’ Then Hudhayfa was brought, and he was told, ‘Salman neither confirms nor denies what you say.’ Hudhayfa came to me and said, ‘Salman, son of Salman’s mother!’ I replied, ‘Hudhayfa, son of Hudhayfa’s mother! You must stop, or I will write to ‘Umar about you.’ When I threatened him with ‘Umar, he left me alone. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had said: ‘I am one of the descendants of Adam. If I have cursed any servant of my community with a curse, or reviled him with an insult, without that being deserved, make it a prayer for him.’”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • وَإِذَا قُرْطَاطٌ،

The household furnishing term is uncommon and its specific referent is unclear from this passage.

Identify قُرْطَاطٌ against relevant lexical sources.

  • فَأُوتَى فَأُسْأَلُ عَنْهَا

The impersonal passive sequence is elliptical and does not explicitly name who brought Salman or questioned him.

Review the inferred passive attribution while preserving the Arabic’s lack of an explicit agent.

  • فَاجْعَلْهَا عَلَيْهِ صَلاةً

The precise force of كنهه in the preceding phrase is not transparent; this rendering treats it as a curse or insult directed at someone undeserving of it.

Review the idiomatic sense of كنهه and the scope of the closing supplication.

  • فَاجْعَلْهَا عَلَيْهِ صَلاةً

The supplied English witness ends after Salman quotes the verse and omits the remainder of the account, including the dialogue with Hudhayfa and the final prophetic report.

Compare against a complete English witness if available; this translation follows the complete Arabic source provided.
