Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 1184

Yahya ibn Salih related to us: Ishaq ibn Yahya al-Kalbi related to us: al-Zuhri related to us: Anas ibn Malik related that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, led them in the noon prayer. When he had given the salutation, he stood on the pulpit and spoke of the Hour and the tremendous events that would occur in it. Then he said, ‘Whoever wishes to ask about something, let him ask. By Allah, you will ask me nothing while I remain standing here without my telling you about it.’ Anas said: When the people heard this from the Messenger of Allah, they wept greatly, and the Messenger of Allah repeatedly said, ‘Ask!’ ‘Umar knelt and said, ‘We are content with Allah as Lord, Islam as religion, and Muhammad as Messenger.’ The Messenger of Allah fell silent when ‘Umar said that. Then the Messenger of Allah said, ‘[Awla.] By the One in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, Paradise and the Fire were shown to me across this wall while I was praying. I have never seen a day like today in regard to good and evil.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic says that Paradise and the Fire were shown across or along this wall; it does not say ‘inside the garden.’
The brief word’s force is unclear in this context; the English witness gives ‘Better!’ but this may be interpretive.
What is the intended meaning of أَوْلَى at this point in the report?
The witness renders the vision as occurring ‘inside this garden,’ while the Arabic mentions the breadth or expanse of this wall.
Does ‘across this wall’ best preserve في عرض هذا الحائط without adding a location?
