The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Whoever possesses the following three qualities will have the sweetness (delight) of faith:
1. The one to whom Allah and His Apostle becomes dearer than anything else.
2. Who loves a person and he loves him only for Allah's sake.
3. Who hates to revert to Atheism (disbelief) as he hates to be thrown into the fire."
The Three Qualities of Sweet Faith
This noble hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari (16) outlines the fundamental characteristics that produce the true sweetness and delight of iman (faith). The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) identifies three essential traits that, when combined, allow a believer to taste the genuine pleasure of faith in their heart.
First Quality: Supreme Love for Allah and His Messenger
The primary quality is that Allah and His Messenger become dearer to a person than anything else in existence. This means one's love for the Creator and His Prophet transcends all worldly attachments—wealth, family, status, and even one's own self. This love manifests through obedience to Allah's commands, emulation of the Prophet's Sunnah, and prioritizing their pleasure above all else.
Classical scholars explain that this love is not merely emotional but practical—it requires acting upon divine guidance and submitting completely to Islamic teachings. When this love becomes the driving force in one's life, the heart experiences the true sweetness of faith.
Second Quality: Love for Allah's Sake
The second characteristic is loving another person solely for the sake of Allah. This means forming bonds of brotherhood and friendship not for worldly benefit, kinship, or personal interest, but purely to please Allah. Such love is free from ulterior motives and remains steadfast through changing circumstances.
Scholars emphasize that this type of love creates a special connection between believers that Allah honors. It is a love that transcends worldly considerations and becomes an act of worship itself, strengthening the communal bonds of the Ummah and purifying the heart from hypocrisy.
Third Quality: Abhorrence of Disbelief
The final quality is hating to revert to disbelief (kufr) with the same intensity as one would hate being thrown into the Fire. This demonstrates the completeness of one's faith—where disbelief becomes so abhorrent that the very thought of it is as terrifying as the thought of eternal punishment.
This profound aversion to kufr protects the believer from doubts and deviations. Scholars note that this quality indicates the firm establishment of tawhid (monotheism) in the heart, where the believer recognizes the absolute falsehood of shirk and kufr and clings firmly to the truth of Islam.
The Interconnected Nature of These Qualities
These three qualities are interconnected and mutually reinforcing. The supreme love for Allah and His Messenger naturally leads to loving what Allah loves and hating what Allah hates. Loving for Allah's sake strengthens communal faith, while abhorring disbelief protects the individual and collective faith from corruption.
