Comment

Prohibition of Pre-Islamic Mourning Practices

This hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari 1297 in the Book of Funerals (Al-Janaa'iz) establishes a fundamental distinction between Islamic conduct and pre-Islamic ignorance (Jahiliyyah). The Prophet (ﷺ) explicitly disassociates from those who engage in excessive mourning rituals.

Explanation of Forbidden Actions

"Slapping the cheeks" refers to striking one's face in grief, while "tearing the clothes" indicates rending garments as an expression of despair. These physical manifestations of excessive grief were common practices during the Days of Ignorance.

Islamic Perspective on Patience

Islam teaches patient perseverance (sabr) in facing calamities, including death. The believer should meet misfortune with the remembrance of Allah and submission to His decree, rather than with violent outward displays that suggest rejection of divine judgment.

Spiritual Consequences

The phrase "is not from us" signifies both a disavowal of such behavior and a warning about its spiritual implications. It indicates that such actions contradict the essential Islamic principles of trust in Allah's wisdom and acceptance of His decree.
