فِي الْجَنَائِزِ وَمَنْ كَانَ آخِرُ كَلاَمِهِ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ

Chapter 2
الأَمْرِ بِاتِّبَاعِ الْجَنَائِزِ
Abu al-Walid narrated to us; Shu'bah narrated to us, from al-Ash'ath, who said: I heard Mu'awiyah ibn Suwayd ibn Muqarrin, from al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded us to do seven things and forbade us from seven. He commanded us to follow funeral processions, visit the sick, accept invitations, support the oppressed, fulfill oaths, return greetings, and invoke mercy for the one who sneezes. He forbade us from using silver vessels, wearing gold rings, and wearing silk, dibaj, qassi, and istabraq.
Muhammad narrated to us; 'Amr ibn Abi Salamah narrated to us, from al-Awza'i, who said: Ibn Shihab informed me, saying: Sa'id ibn al-Musayyab informed me that Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: ‘A Muslim's right over another Muslim is five: returning the greeting, visiting the sick, following funeral processions, accepting an invitation, and invoking mercy for the one who sneezes.’
'Abd al-Razzaq corroborated him, saying: Ma'mar informed us. Salamah also narrated it from 'Uqayl.
Chapter 3
الدُّخُولِ عَلَى الْمَيِّتِ بَعْدَ الْمَوْتِ إِذَا أُدْرِجَ فِي كَفَنِهِ
Bishr ibn Muhammad narrated to us; 'Abdullah informed us, saying: Ma'mar and Yunus informed me, from al-Zuhri, who said: Abu Salamah informed me that 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), told him: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came on his horse from his dwelling at al-Sunh and dismounted. He entered the mosque but did not speak to the people. Then he dismounted and went in to 'A'ishah, made his way to the Prophet (ﷺ), who was covered with a Yemeni striped cloth, and uncovered his face. He leaned over him, kissed him, and wept. He said: ‘May my father be sacrificed for you, Prophet of Allah! Allah will not bring two deaths upon you. As for the death decreed for you, you have died it.’
Abu Salamah said: Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) informed me that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went out while 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was addressing the people. He said: ‘Sit down,’ but 'Umar refused. He said again: ‘Sit down,’ but 'Umar refused. Abu Bakr then recited the testimony of faith, and the people turned toward him and left 'Umar. He said: ‘To proceed: whoever among you worshipped Muhammad, Muhammad (ﷺ) has died. Whoever worships Allah, Allah is living and does not die.’ Allah Most High said: ‘Muhammad is only a messenger…’ through ‘…the grateful.’ By Allah, it was as if the people had not known that Allah had revealed the verse until Abu Bakr recited it. The people received it from him, and everyone heard reciting it.
Yahya ibn Bukayr narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us, from 'Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Kharijah ibn Zayd ibn Thabit informed me that Umm al-'Ala'—an Ansari woman who had pledged allegiance to the Prophet (ﷺ)—told him: The Muhajirun were distributed among us by lot, and 'Uthman ibn Maz'un fell to our share, so we lodged him in our homes. He fell ill with the illness from which he died. When he died, was washed, and was shrouded in his clothes, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came in. I said: ‘May Allah's mercy be upon you, Abu al-Sa'ib. I bear witness that Allah has honored you.’ The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘How do you know that Allah has honored him?’ I said: ‘May my father be sacrificed for you, Messenger of Allah! Then whom does Allah honor?’ He said: ‘As for him, certainty has come to him. By Allah, I hope good for him. By Allah, although I am Allah's Messenger, I do not know what will be done with me.’ She said: By Allah, after that I will never again declare anyone pure.
Sa'id ibn 'Ufair narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us similarly. Nafi' ibn Yazid reported from 'Uqayl with the wording ‘what will be done with him.’ Shu'ayb, 'Amr ibn Dinar, and Ma'mar corroborated him.

People were stopping me from doing so, but the Prophet (ﷺ) did not stop me. My aunt Fatimah began weeping, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: ‘Whether you weep or do not weep, the angels continued to shade him with their wings until you lifted him.’
Ibn Jurayj corroborated him: Ibn al-Munkadir informed me that he heard Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).

When morning came, they told him. He said: ‘What prevented you from informing me?’ They said: ‘It was night—and dark—and we disliked causing you hardship.’ He went to the man's grave and prayed over him.
