Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us: Abū Aḥmad al-Zubayrī narrated to us: ʿUmar ibn Saʿīd ibn Abī Ḥusayn narrated to us; he said: ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ narrated to me, from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Allah has not sent down any disease without also sending down a remedy for it.”

Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd narrated to us: Bishr ibn al-Mufaḍḍal narrated to us, from Khālid ibn Dhakwān, from al-Rubayyiʿ bint Muʿawwidh ibn ʿAfrāʾ, who said: “We would go on campaigns with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, giving the people water, serving them, and bringing the dead and wounded back to Medina.”

Al-Ḥusayn narrated to me: Aḥmad ibn Manīʿ narrated to us: Marwān ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us: Sālim al-Afṭas narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: “Healing is in three things: a drink of honey, an incision for cupping, and cauterization with fire. I forbid my community from cauterization.” The report is traced back to the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Qummī narrated it from Layth, from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ, regarding honey and cupping.

Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm narrated to me: Surayj ibn Yūnus Abū al-Ḥārith informed us: Marwān ibn Shujāʿ narrated to us, from Sālim al-Afṭas, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “Healing is in three things: an incision for cupping, a drink of honey, or cauterization with fire. I forbid my community from cauterization.”

ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Abū Usāmah narrated to us; he said: Hishām informed me, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said: “The Prophet ﷺ liked sweets and honey.”

Abū Nuʿaym narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Ghasīl narrated to us, from ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah, who said: I heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “If there is any good in your remedies—or if there is to be any good in your remedies—it is in an incision for cupping, a drink of honey, or a cauterization with fire that is suited to the illness. I do not like to be cauterized.”

ʿAyyāsh ibn al-Walīd narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated to us: Saʿīd narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Abū al-Mutawakkil, from Abū Saʿīd: A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said, “My brother is suffering from his stomach.” He said, “Give him honey to drink.” The man came a second time, and he said, “Give him honey to drink.” Then he came again and said, “I have done so.” He said, “Allah has spoken the truth, and your brother’s stomach has lied. Give him honey to drink.” The man gave it to him, and he recovered.

Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us: Sallām ibn Miskīn narrated to us: Thābit narrated to us, from Anas: “Some people were ill. They said, ‘Messenger of Allah, give us shelter and food.’ When they recovered, they said, ‘Medina is unhealthy.’ So he lodged them in al-Ḥarrah with a small herd of his camels and said, ‘Drink their milk.’ When they recovered, they killed the Prophet’s ﷺ shepherd and drove off his camels. He sent men in pursuit of them, who cut off their hands and feet and branded their eyes. I saw one of them gnawing at the ground with his tongue until he died.”

Sallām said: I was told that al-Ḥajjāj said to Anas, “Tell me of the harshest punishment the Prophet ﷺ inflicted.” So Anas told him this. When al-Ḥasan heard of it, he said, “I wish he had not told him this.”

Mūsā ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us: Hammām narrated to us, from Qatādah, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): “Some people found Medina unsuitable for them, so the Prophet ﷺ instructed them to join his camel herder—meaning, the camels—and drink their milk and urine. They joined the herder and drank their milk and urine until their bodies recovered. Then they killed the herder and drove off the camels. News reached the Prophet ﷺ, and he sent men in pursuit of them. They were brought back, and he had their hands and feet cut off and their eyes branded.” Qatādah said: Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn informed me that this happened before the prescribed punishments were revealed.

ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: ʿUbayd Allāh narrated to us: Isrāʾīl narrated to us, from Manṣūr, from Khālid ibn Saʿd, who said: “We set out, and Ghālib ibn Abjar was with us. He became ill on the way, and we reached Medina while he was sick. Ibn Abī ʿAtīq visited him and said to us, ‘Use this black seed. Take five or seven seeds, grind them, then put drops of oil into his nostrils, on this side and that side. ʿĀʾishah told me that she heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “This black seed is a remedy for every disease except death.”’” I asked, “What is al-sām?” He said, “Death.”

Yaḥyā ibn Bukayr narrated to us: al-Layth narrated to us, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, who said: Abū Salamah and Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab informed me that Abū Hurayrah told them he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Black seed is a remedy for every disease except death.” Ibn Shihāb said: “Al-sām is death, and black seed is shūnīz.”

Ḥibbān ibn Mūsā narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh informed us: Yūnus ibn Yazīd informed us, from ʿUqayl, from Ibn Shihāb, from ʿUrwah, from ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her): “She would prescribe talbīnah for the sick and for those grieving the loss of someone. She used to say, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Talbīnah refreshes the heart of the sick person and removes some of his grief.”’”

Farwah ibn Abī al-Maghrāʾ narrated to us: ʿAlī ibn Mushir narrated to us, from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah: “She would prescribe talbīnah and say, ‘It is the disliked beneficial thing.’”

Muʿallā ibn Asad narrated to us: Wuhayb narrated to us, from Ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet ﷺ: “He was cupped, paid the cupper his fee, and used nasal medication.”

Ṣadaqah ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us: Ibn ʿUyaynah informed us; he said: I heard al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbayd Allāh, from Umm Qays bint Miḥṣan, who said: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say, “Use this Indian aloeswood, for it contains seven remedies. It is administered through the nose for a throat ailment, and placed in the side of the mouth for pleurisy.”

She said: I came to the Prophet ﷺ with a son of mine who had not yet begun eating solid food. He urinated on him, so he called for water and sprinkled it over him.

Abū Maʿmar narrated to us: ʿAbd al-Wārith narrated to us: Ayyūb narrated to us, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ was cupped while he was fasting.”

Musaddad narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us, from ʿAmr, from Ṭāwūs and ʿAṭāʾ, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The Prophet ﷺ was cupped while in the state of consecration.”

Muḥammad ibn Muqātil narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh informed us: Ḥumayd al-Ṭawīl informed us, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who was asked about the fee of a cupper. He said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was cupped by Abū Ṭaybah. He gave him two ṣāʿs of food and spoke to his masters, who reduced his fee.” He said, “Among the best remedies you use are cupping and sea costus.” And he said, “Do not torment your children by pressing the throat for a throat ailment; use costus instead.”

Saʿīd ibn Talīd narrated to us; he said: Ibn Wahb narrated to me; he said: ʿAmr and others informed me that Bukayr narrated to him that ʿĀṣim ibn ʿUmar ibn Qatādah narrated to him that Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with them both) visited al-Muqannaʿ. He said, “I will not leave until you are cupped, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, ‘There is healing in it.’”
