Commentary on the Reality of Evil Eye

The statement of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) affirms the reality of the evil eye (al-'ayn) as established in Islamic tradition. This refers to harm that can befall a person, animal, or object when someone looks at them with envy or admiration without invoking Allah's protection.

Scholars explain that the evil eye is a genuine phenomenon supported by both revelation and human experience. The Prophet's confirmation establishes it as part of Islamic creed, while his teachings provide protective measures through specific supplications and recitations.

Prohibition of Tattooing

The prohibition of tattooing (al-washm) stems from the principle of preserving the natural creation of Allah. Classical scholars classify tattooing as haram (forbidden) because it involves permanently altering Allah's creation without legitimate medical necessity.

Imam al-Nawawi explains that tattooing changes Allah's creation and involves unnecessary pain. This prohibition applies to both the one who performs the tattooing and the one who receives it, except in cases of genuine medical treatment where no alternative exists.

Spiritual Protection Measures

The Prophet taught specific protections against the evil eye, including reciting Surah al-Falaq and Surah an-Nas, seeking refuge in Allah, and saying "Masha'Allah" when admiring something. These practices acknowledge Allah's power while seeking His protection from harm.

Scholars emphasize that while the evil eye is real, ultimate protection comes from Allah alone. Muslims are encouraged to maintain strong faith, regularly recite Quranic verses of protection, and avoid both giving and being affected by envious glances through spiritual vigilance.
