Hadith Text and Context

Narrated Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas: I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "Whoever takes seven 'Ajwa dates in the morning will not be effected by magic or poison on that day." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5779)

This hadith is recorded in the Book of Medicine (Kitab al-Tibb) of Sahih al-Bukhari, indicating its significance in Islamic prophetic medicine.

Scholarly Commentary

The 'Ajwa dates mentioned are a specific variety grown in Medina, known for their superior quality and medicinal properties according to prophetic tradition.

Scholars explain that this protection is a special divine blessing (barakah) granted through following the Prophet's guidance, not merely a physical property of the dates themselves.

The number seven holds significance in Islamic tradition, often representing completeness and divine perfection in creation.

Juridical Ruling

This practice is considered recommended (mustahabb) rather than obligatory, and the protection is understood to be conditional upon sincere faith and trust in Allah.

Scholars emphasize that this prophetic remedy does not replace necessary medical treatment or precautionary measures against actual poisons.

Spiritual Dimensions

The hadith demonstrates Islam's holistic approach to health, combining physical nourishment with spiritual protection.

Ibn al-Qayyim notes that such prophetic remedies work through both physical properties and the spiritual power of following the Sunnah with faith.
