Ibrahim ibn Musa narrated to me: Hisham informed us that Ibn Jurayj informed them. He said: Abd al-Karim informed me that he heard Miqsam, the client of Abdullah ibn al-Harith, relate from Ibn Abbas that he heard him recite: “Those believers who stay behind are not equal”—meaning those who stayed behind from Badr and those who set out for Badr.

  • The quoted words are the beginning of Quran 4:95; Ibn Abbas applies them here to those absent from Badr versus those who went.
