Abu Ishaq said that he heard al-Bara, whom a man from Qays asked: “Did you flee from the Messenger of Allah on the day of Hunayn?” Al-Bara replied: “The Messenger of Allah did not flee. Hawazin were archers. When we charged them, they retreated, and we became absorbed in the spoils. Then we were met with arrows. I saw the Messenger of Allah riding his white mule, with Abu Sufyan holding its reins, while he said: ‘I am the Prophet—there is no lie in it.’” Israil and Zuhayr added: “The Prophet dismounted from his mule.”

This wording says Hawazin retreated when charged, then the Muslims were struck by arrows as they turned to the spoils. It also gives an added variant that the Prophet dismounted.
