Oneness, Uniqueness of Allah (Tawheed)

Sahih al-Bukhari - Hadith 7376

Hadith Text

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to mankind."

Scholarly Commentary

This profound hadith establishes the inseparable connection between divine mercy and human compassion. The Prophet (ﷺ) teaches that Allah's mercy is conditional upon our mercy toward His creation.

Scholars explain that this encompasses all of humanity - Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Showing mercy includes kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and refraining from harm. The one who hardens his heart against people demonstrates his unworthiness of divine compassion.

Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali comments that this hadith indicates the perfection of Allah's justice - He treats His servants according to how they treat others. Al-Qurtubi adds that mercy toward creation is among the greatest means of attaining Allah's mercy in this life and the hereafter.

This teaching reflects the comprehensive nature of Islamic morality, where worship of Allah is intrinsically linked to righteous conduct toward His creation.
