Oneness, Uniqueness of Allah (Tawheed)
Sahih al-Bukhari - Hadith 7505
Hadith Text
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah said, 'I am to my slave as he thinks of Me, (i.e. I am able to do for him what he thinks I can do for him)."
Commentary on Divine Mercy
This sacred hadith qudsi reveals the profound connection between a servant's perception of Allah and the Divine response. When a believer maintains good thoughts (husn al-dhann) about Allah - believing in His boundless mercy, limitless power, and perfect wisdom - Allah treats them according to that positive expectation.
The scholars explain that this encompasses both worldly matters and spiritual rewards. If one trusts in Allah's provision, He will provide. If one hopes for His forgiveness, He will forgive. This principle operates within the framework of Divine wisdom and the servant's actions.
Theological Implications
This hadith demonstrates Allah's sublime generosity and the honor He bestows upon His servants. It teaches that Allah's treatment of His creation corresponds to their understanding of His attributes. Those who recognize His mercy receive mercy, while those who despair of it may find themselves deprived.
Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali comments that this hadith encourages believers to always think well of Allah, especially in times of difficulty and when making supplications. However, this good expectation must be accompanied by righteous deeds and proper reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah.
Practical Application
The believer should cultivate positive thoughts about Allah in all circumstances - in health and sickness, in ease and hardship. This includes believing that Allah accepts repentance, answers supplications, forgives sins, and grants success to those who strive in His path.
This noble hadith serves as a powerful motivation for maintaining optimism in Divine decree and developing a strong, trusting relationship with the Creator. It reminds us that our spiritual state directly influences how we experience Allah's treatment in our lives.
