Muhammad narrated to us: Ismail informed us, from Ibn Abi Najih, with this wording: “For a known measure and a known weight.”

Musaddad narrated to us: Abd al-Wahid narrated to us: Ma mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salama ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Jabir ibn Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Messenger of Allah ruled that the right of pre-emption applies to everything that has not been divided. Once boundaries have been set and routes laid out, there is no right of pre-emption.

Muhammad ibn Yusuf narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Abu Burda, who said: My grandfather Abu Burda informed me, from his father Abu Musa al-Ashari, may Allah be pleased with him, who said that the Prophet said: “The trustworthy treasurer who willingly delivers what he has been instructed to give is one of the two charitable givers.”

Musaddad narrated to us: Yahya narrated to us, from Qurra ibn Khalid; he said: Humayd ibn Hilal narrated to me: Abu Burda narrated to us, from Abu Musa, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: I came to the Prophet with two men from the Ashari tribe and said, “I did not know that they were seeking employment.” He said: “By no means”—or he said—“we do not appoint to our work anyone who seeks it.”

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “A wealthy person’s delay in payment is wrongdoing. If one of you is referred to a solvent person, let him accept the referral.”

Abu al-Zinad reported from Muhammad ibn Hamza ibn Amr al-Aslami, from his father, that Umar sent him as a zakat collector. A man had intercourse with his wife’s enslaved woman, so Hamza took a guarantor from the man until he came before Umar. Umar had flogged him one hundred lashes; he accepted their account and excused him on the basis of ignorance. Jarir and al-Ashath said to Abdullah ibn Masud regarding the apostates, “Ask them to repent and take guarantors for them.” They repented, and their clans stood as guarantors for them. Hammad said, “If someone guarantees a person and that person dies, there is nothing due from the guarantor.” Al-Hakam said, “He is liable.”

Abu Abd Allah said: Al-Layth narrated to me, from Jafar ibn Rabia, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz, from Abu Huraira, from the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), that he mentioned a man from among the Children of Israel who asked another man from among the Children of Israel to lend him one thousand dinars. The lender said, “Bring witnesses whom I can call to witness.” He replied, “Allah is sufficient as a witness.” The lender said, “Then bring me a guarantor.” He replied, “Allah is sufficient as a guarantor.” The lender said, “You have spoken truly,” and gave him the money for a specified term. The borrower traveled by sea and completed his business. Then he looked for a vessel to take him to the lender by the agreed due date, but could find none. He took a piece of wood, hollowed it out, put inside it one thousand dinars and a letter to his lender, and sealed the opening. Then he brought it to the sea and said, “O Allah, You know that I borrowed one thousand dinars from so-and-so. He asked me for a guarantor, and I said, ‘Allah is sufficient as a guarantor,’ and he accepted You. He asked me for a witness, and I said, ‘Allah is sufficient as a witness,’ and he accepted You. I tried hard to find a vessel to send him what is due to him, but I could not. I entrust it to You.” He cast the wood into the sea until it went out into it, then departed, still looking for a vessel to take him to his own land. The lender went out, hoping that a vessel had arrived with his money, and found the piece of wood containing the money. He took it home for firewood. When he split it open, he found the money and the letter inside. Then the borrower arrived, bringing one thousand dinars, and said, “By Allah, I kept trying to find a vessel to bring you your money, but I found no vessel before the one I came on.” The lender asked, “Had you sent me anything?” He replied, “I told you I found no vessel before the one I came on.” The lender said, “Allah has delivered on your behalf what you sent in the piece of wood. Go back with your one thousand dinars, rightly guided.”

Narrated Ali: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) ordered me to give in charity the coverings and hides of the sacrificial camels that had been slaughtered.

Narrated Uqba ibn Amir: The Prophet (ﷺ) gave him sheep to distribute among his companions. One young male goat remained, so he mentioned it to the Prophet (ﷺ), who said, “Offer it as a sacrifice yourself.”

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “No Muslim plants a tree or sows a crop from which a bird, a person, or an animal eats without it being counted for him as charity.” Muslim said to us: Aban narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas, from the Prophet (ﷺ), with this report.

Narrated Sahl ibn Sad: A cup was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ), and he drank from it. To his right was a boy, the youngest of the people present, and to his left were elders. He said, “Boy, will you permit me to give it to the elders?” The boy said, “I would not give anyone preference over myself for my share, Messenger of Allah.” So he gave it to him.

Narrated al-Zuhri: Anas ibn Malik told me that a domestic sheep was milked for the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) while he was in Anas’s house. Its milk was diluted with water from the well in Anas’s house. A cup was given to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), and he drank from it. When he removed the cup from his mouth, Abu Bakr was on his left and a Bedouin on his right. Umar, fearing that he might give it to the Bedouin, said, “Give it to Abu Bakr, Messenger of Allah; he is beside you.” But he gave it to the Bedouin on his right, then said, “The one on the right first, then the one on the right.”

Muhammad narrated to us: Jarir informed us, from al-Mughira, from al-Sha'bi, from Jabir ibn Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said: I went on a military expedition with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, ‘What do you think of your camel? Will you sell it to me?’ I said, ‘Yes,’ and sold it to him. When he arrived in Medina, I brought the camel to him the next morning, and he gave me its price.

Mualla ibn Asad narrated to us: Abd al-Wahid narrated to us: al-A'mash narrated to us, saying: We were discussing pledges in advance-payment sales in the presence of Ibrahim. He said: al-Aswad told me, from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) bought food from a Jew on deferred payment and pledged an iron coat of mail to him.

Abu al-Walid narrated to us: Shu'ba narrated to us, saying: Abd al-Malik ibn Maysara informed me—he said: I heard al-Nazzal say: I heard Abd Allah say: I heard a man reciting a verse in a way different from what I had heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). I took him by the hand and brought him to the Messenger of Allah, who said: ‘Both of you have done well.’ Shu'ba said: I think he said: ‘Do not differ, for those who came before you differed and perished.’

Yahya ibn Qaza'a narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Sa'd narrated to us, from Ibn Shihab, from Abu Salama and Abd al-Rahman al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Two men argued, one a Muslim and the other a Jew. The Muslim said, ‘By the One who chose Muhammad above all the worlds!’ The Jew said, ‘By the One who chose Moses above all the worlds!’ The Muslim raised his hand and slapped the Jew’s face. The Jew went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what had happened between them. The Prophet summoned the Muslim and asked him about it; he told him. The Prophet said: ‘Do not rank me above Moses. On the Day of Resurrection, people will be struck unconscious, and I will be among them. I will be the first to recover, and I will see Moses holding fast to a side of the Throne. I will not know whether he was among those who were struck and recovered before me, or among those whom Allah exempted.’

Musa ibn Isma'il narrated to us: Wuhaib narrated to us: Amr ibn Yahya narrated to us, from his father, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: While the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated, a Jewish man came and said, ‘Abu al-Qasim, a man among your Companions struck me in the face.’ He asked, ‘Who?’ The man said, ‘A man from the Ansar.’ The Prophet said, ‘Call him.’ He asked, ‘Did you strike him?’ The man replied, ‘I heard him in the market swearing, “By the One who chose Moses above humankind!” I said, “You wretch, above Muhammad too?”’ Anger overcame me, and I struck his face. The Prophet said: ‘Do not rank the prophets above one another. On the Day of Resurrection people will be struck unconscious, and I will be the first over whom the earth opens. Then I will see Moses holding one of the supports of the Throne. I do not know whether he was among those struck unconscious, or whether the first swoon was enough for him.’

Musa narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us, from Qatada, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), that a Jewish man crushed a girl’s head between two stones. She was asked, ‘Who did this to you? So-and-so? So-and-so?’ until the Jewish man was named, whereupon she nodded. The man was seized and confessed, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that his head be crushed between two stones.

Adam narrated to us: Shu'ba narrated to us. Muhammad ibn Bashshar also told me: Ghundar narrated to us: Shu'ba narrated to us, from Salama, who said: I heard Suwayd ibn Ghafala say: I met Ubayy ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: I found a purse containing one hundred dinars and brought it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, ‘Announce it for a year.’ I did so, but found no one who recognized it. Then I came back to him, and he said, ‘Announce it for a year.’ I did so and found no one. I came back to him a third time, and he said, ‘Remember its container, its number, and its tie. If its owner comes, return it to him; otherwise, make use of it.’ I made use of it. Later I met him in Mecca, and he said, ‘I do not know whether it was three years or one year.’

Ishaq ibn Ibrahim informed us: Mu'adh ibn Hisham informed us: My father told me, from Qatada, from Abu al-Mutawakkil al-Naji, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: ‘When the believers have passed safely beyond the Fire, they will be held at a bridge between Paradise and the Fire, where they will settle the wrongs they committed against one another in this world. When they have been purified and refined, permission will be given for them to enter Paradise. By the One in whose hand is Muhammad’s soul, each of them will know his dwelling in Paradise more clearly than he knew his home in this world.’ Yunus ibn Muhammad also said: Shu'ban narrated to us, from Qatada: Abu al-Mutawakkil narrated to us.’
