Sahih al-Bukhari
Sacrifice on Occasion of Birth (`Aqiqa)
كتاب العقيقة
Chapter 1
تَسْمِيَةِ الْمَوْلُودِ غَدَاةَ يُولَدُ، لِمَنْ لَمْ يَعُقَّ عَنْهُ، وَتَحْنِيكِهِ
Isḥāq ibn Naṣr narrated to me: Abū Usāmah narrated to us, saying: Burayd narrated to me, from Abū Burdah, from Abū Mūsā (may God be pleased with him), who said: “A boy was born to me, so I brought him to the Prophet ﷺ. He named him Ibrāhīm, rubbed a date on his palate, prayed for blessing for him, and handed him back to me. He was the eldest of Abū Mūsā’s children.”
Musaddad narrated to us: Yaḥyā narrated to us, from Hishām, from his father, from ʿĀʾishah (may God be pleased with her), who said: “An infant was brought to the Prophet ﷺ so that he could rub a date on its palate. The child urinated on him, so he poured water over it.”
Isḥāq ibn Naṣr narrated to us: Abū Usāmah narrated to us: Hishām ibn ʿUrwah narrated to us, from his father, from Asmāʾ daughter of Abū Bakr (may God be pleased with them both), that she conceived ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr in Mecca. She said: “I set out while I was near the end of my pregnancy and came to Medina. I stayed at Qubāʾ and gave birth at Qubāʾ. Then I brought him to the Messenger of God ﷺ and placed him in his lap. He called for a date, chewed it, then put some of his saliva into the child’s mouth. Thus the first thing to enter his stomach was the saliva of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Then he rubbed a date on his palate, prayed for him, and invoked blessing upon him. He was the first child born in Islam, and they rejoiced greatly over him, for they had been told that the Jews had bewitched them so that no child would be born to them.”
Maṭar ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us: Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAwn informed us, from Anas ibn Sīrīn, from Anas ibn Mālik (may God be pleased with him), who said: “A son of Abū Ṭalḥah was ill. Abū Ṭalḥah went out, and the child died. When Abū Ṭalḥah returned, he asked, ‘How is my son?’ Umm Sulaym said, ‘He is more at rest than he has been.’ She brought him supper, and he ate. Then he was intimate with her. When he had finished, she said, ‘Bury the child.’ In the morning Abū Ṭalḥah went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him. He asked, ‘Did you spend the night as newlyweds?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘O God, bless them both.’ She gave birth to a boy. Abū Ṭalḥah said to me, ‘Keep him safe until you bring him to the Prophet ﷺ.’ He brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, and she sent dates with him. The Prophet ﷺ took the child and asked, ‘Is there anything with him?’ They said, ‘Yes, dates.’ The Prophet ﷺ took them, chewed them, then took some from his mouth and put it into the child’s mouth. He rubbed the child’s palate with it and named him ʿAbd Allāh.”
Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us: Ibn Abī ʿAdī narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAwn, from Muḥammad, from Anas; and he related the hadith.
Chapter 2
إِمَاطَةِ الأَذَى عَنِ الصَّبِيِّ، فِي الْعَقِيقَةِ
Abū al-Nuʿmān narrated to us: Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Muḥammad, from Salmān ibn ʿĀmir, who said: “With a boy is an ʿaqīqah.” Ḥajjāj said: Ḥammād narrated to us, saying: Ayyūb, Qatādah, Hishām, and Ḥabīb informed us, from Ibn Sīrīn, from Salmān, from the Prophet ﷺ.
More than one narrator reported it from ʿĀṣim and Hishām, from Ḥafṣah daughter of Sīrīn, from al-Rabāb, from Salmān, from the Prophet ﷺ. Yazīd ibn Ibrāhīm narrated it from Ibn Sīrīn, from Salmān, as his own statement.
Aṣbagh said: Ibn Wahb informed me, from Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim, from Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, from Muḥammad ibn Sīrīn: Salmān ibn ʿĀmir al-Ḍabbī narrated to us, saying: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: “With a boy is an ʿaqīqah. So shed blood on his behalf and remove the harm from him.”
ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī al-Aswad narrated to me: Quraysh ibn Anas narrated to us, from Ḥabīb ibn al-Shahīd, who said: Ibn Sīrīn instructed me to ask al-Ḥasan from whom he had heard the hadith about the ʿaqīqah. I asked him, and he said: “From Samurah ibn Jundub.”
Chapter 3
الْفَرَعِ
ʿAbān narrated to us: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Maʿmar informed us: al-Zuhrī informed us, from Ibn al-Musayyab, from Abū Hurayrah (may God be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “There is no farʿ and no ʿatīrah.” The farʿ was the first offspring; they used to slaughter it for their false gods. The ʿatīrah was [a sacrifice] in Rajab.
Chapter 4
الْعَتِيرَةِ
ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us. Al-Zuhrī said: Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyab narrated to us, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: “There is no farʿ and no ʿatīrah.” He said: “The farʿ was the first offspring born to them; they used to slaughter it for their false gods. The ʿatīrah was in Rajab.”
