Abdullah ibn Yusuf informed us: Malik informed us, from Humayd, from Anas ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: Abu Tayba cupped the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet ordered that he be given a sa of dates, and instructed his household to reduce his kharaj.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Kharaj refers to a levy or payment owed by a dependent worker; the Arabic calls those instructed أهله without specifying their legal relationship.
وَأَمَرَ أَهْلَهُ أَنْ يُخَفِّفُوا مِنْ خَرَاجِهِ
The Arabic says his household or people; the English witness identifies them as his masters.
Does أهله refer specifically to his owners in this context?
