Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah narrated to us: Yaḥyā ibn Wāḍiḥ narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq, from ʿAbd al-Karīm ibn Abī al-Mukhāriq, from Ḥibbān ibn Jazʾ, from his brother Khuzaymah ibn Jazʾ, who said: I said: Messenger of God, I have come to ask about the creatures of the earth. What do you say about the desert monitor lizard? He said: I do not eat it, nor do I declare it forbidden. I said: Then I eat what you have not forbidden. Why, Messenger of God? He said: A community among the communities disappeared, and I saw a creature that unsettled me. I said: Messenger of God, what do you say about the rabbit? He said: I do not eat it, nor do I declare it forbidden. I said: Then I eat what you have not forbidden. Why, Messenger of God? He said: I was told that it menstruates.
