Arabic hadith text
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ " إِذَا سَلَّمَ عَلَيْكُمْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ فَقُولُوا وَعَلَيْكُمْ " .

It was narrated that Abu Bakr said: ‘Abdah ibn Sulayman and Muhammad ibn Bishr narrated to us, from Sa‘id, from Qatadah, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “When one of the People of the Book greets you, say, ‘And upon you.’”’
