It was narrated from Abu Dharr that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Allah, Blessed and Exalted, says: ‘Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten times its like, and I will add more. Whoever comes with an evil deed will be repaid with only its like, or I will forgive him. Whoever draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by an arm’s length; whoever draws near to Me by an arm’s length, I draw near to him by a fathom. Whoever comes to Me walking, I come to him swiftly. Whoever meets Me with sins nearly filling the earth, without associating anything with Me, I will meet him with forgiveness just as vast.’’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic distinguishes an arm’s length (dhira‘) from a fathom (ba‘) in the successive comparisons. The expression ‘nearly filling the earth’ renders qirab al-ard.
