حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، أَنْبَأَنَا اللَّيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ أَبِي حَبِيبٍ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ قَالَ عَطَاءُ بْنُ أَبِي رَبَاحٍ سَمِعْتُ جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، يَقُولُ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ عَامَ الْفَتْحِ وَهُوَ بِمَكَّةَ ‏"‏ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ حَرَّمَ بَيْعَ الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْتَةِ وَالْخِنْزِيرِ وَالأَصْنَامِ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فَقِيلَ لَهُ عِنْدَ ذَلِكَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ شُحُومَ الْمَيْتَةِ فَإِنَّهُ يُدْهَنُ بِهَا السُّفُنُ وَيُدْهَنُ بِهَا الْجُلُودُ وَيَسْتَصْبِحُ بِهَا النَّاسُ قَالَ ‏"‏ لاَ هُنَّ حَرَامٌ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ ‏"‏ قَاتَلَ اللَّهُ الْيَهُودَ إِنَّ اللَّهَ حَرَّمَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشُّحُومَ فَأَجْمَلُوهُ ثُمَّ بَاعُوهُ فَأَكَلُوا ثَمَنَهُ ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Isa ibn Hammad al-Misri informed us; al-Layth ibn Sad informed us, from Yazid ibn Abi Habib, who said: Ata ibn Abi Rabah said, “I heard Jabir ibn Abd Allah say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the year of the Conquest, while he was in Mecca: ‘Allah and His Messenger have forbidden the sale of wine, carrion, swine, and idols.’ He was asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, what about the fat of carrion? It is used to grease ships and hides, and people use it as lamp fuel.’ He said, ‘No; they are forbidden.’ Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘May Allah condemn the Jews. Allah forbade them animal fat, but they melted it down, sold it, and consumed its price.’”

    فأجملوه is rendered here as melting the forbidden fat down before selling it; the report emphasizes that they processed it and sold it despite the prohibition.
