حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، عَنْ حُمَيْدٍ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الثَّمَرَةِ حَتَّى تَزْهُوَ وَعَنْ بَيْعِ الْعِنَبِ حَتَّى يَسْوَدَّ وَعَنْ بَيْعِ الْحَبِّ حَتَّى يَشْتَدَّ .

Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us; Hajjaj narrated to us; Hammad narrated to us, from Humayd, from Anas ibn Malik, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade selling fruit until it begins to ripen, grapes until they turn black, and grain until it hardens.

أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ نَهَى عَنْ بَيْعِ الثَّمَرَةِ حَتَّى تَزْهُوَ وَعَنْ بَيْعِ الْعِنَبِ حَتَّى يَسْوَدَّ وَعَنْ بَيْعِ الْحَبِّ حَتَّى يَشْتَدَّ .
Tazhū refers to fruit reaching visible ripeness or color; the report then specifies blackening for grapes and hardening for grain.
Does “begins to ripen” convey tazhū without implying a narrower color stage?
