Hisham ibn Ammar narrated to us; Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Ala ibn Abd al-Rahman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a man selling food and put his hand into it. He found it adulterated, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever cheats is not one of us.”

Maghshush describes the food as adulterated or mixed with something deceptive; the report does not specify how it was altered.

Does “adulterated” convey maghshush without supplying a particular form of fraud?
