حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَزَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ، وَشِبْلٍ، قَالُوا كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم فَسَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنِ الأَمَةِ تَزْنِي قَبْلَ أَنْ تُحْصَنَ . فَقَالَ " اجْلِدْهَا فَإِنْ زَنَتْ فَاجْلِدْهَا فَإِنْ زَنَتْ فَاجْلِدْهَا " . ثُمَّ قَالَ فِي الثَّالِثَةِ أَوْ فِي الرَّابِعَةِ " فَبِعْهَا وَلَوْ بِحَبْلٍ مِنْ شَعَرٍ " .

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Muhammad ibn al-Sabbah narrated to us; they said: Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah, from Abu Hurayrah, Zayd ibn Khalid, and Shibl, who said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man asked him about a slave woman who commits zina before marriage. He said: Flog her. If she commits zina again, flog her. If she commits zina again, flog her. Then on the third or fourth time he said: Sell her, even for a rope of hair.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic preserves the repeated flogging instructions and says “on the third or fourth” before the sale order. The English witness is abbreviated and unclear at this point.
