Ali ibn Muhammad reported to us: Abu Usamah reported to us, from al-Walid ibn Kathir, from Amr ibn Shuayb, from his father, from his grandfather: A man from Muzaynah asked the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) about fruit. He said, ‘Whatever is taken from its clusters and carried away, its value and an equal amount are due; whatever is taken from the drying yard incurs amputation if it reaches the value of a shield. If one eats from it without carrying it away, there is nothing due.’ He asked, ‘What about a sheep stolen from the pasture, Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘Its value and an equal amount are due, along with a deterrent punishment. Whatever is taken from the sheepfold incurs amputation if what was taken is worth the value of a shield.’

Akmam refers to fruit clusters; jirān is where dates are dried, while marāh is an enclosure or fold for livestock. The text distinguishes eating in place from carrying fruit away.
