Ali ibn Muhammad reported to us: Waki reported to us, from al-Fadl ibn Dalham, from al-Hasan, from Qabisah ibn Hurayth, from Salamah ibn al-Muhabbiq: When the verse of prescribed punishments was revealed, it was said to Abu Thabit Sad ibn Ubadah, a jealous man, ‘What would you do if you found a man with Umm Thabit?’ He said, ‘I would strike them both with the sword. Do you think I would wait until I brought four witnesses, by which time he would have fulfilled his desire and gone? Or should I say, “I saw such and such,” and then you would flog me with the prescribed punishment and never accept my testimony again?’ This was mentioned to the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace), and he said, ‘The sword is sufficient as a witness.’ Then he said, ‘No; I fear that the drunkard and the jealous man may rush into doing that.’ Abu Abdullah, meaning Ibn Majah, said: I heard Abu Zurah say, ‘This is a hadith of Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi; I missed hearing it from him.’

  • The final compiler note says Ibn Majah did not hear this report directly from Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi. The English witness adds a grading label, omitted here.
