Abu Bishr Bakr ibn Khalaf reported to us: Ibn Abi al-Dayf reported to us: Abdullah ibn Uthman ibn Khuthaym reported to us, from Said ibn Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, ‘Whoever claims affiliation to someone other than his father, or takes as patron someone other than his own patrons, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people.’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The phrase tawalla ghayra mawālihi concerns claiming allegiance or patronage outside one’s own mawla affiliation; the English witness specifies a freed slave, which the Arabic wording here does not state.
