حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ خَلاَّدٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْقَطَّانُ، حَدَّثَنَا مُجَالِدٌ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " مَا مِنْ حَاكِمٍ يَحْكُمُ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ إِلاَّ جَاءَ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَمَلَكٌ آخِذٌ بِقَفَاهُ ثُمَّ يَرْفَعُ رَأْسَهُ إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَإِنْ قَالَ أَلْقِهِ أَلْقَاهُ فِي مَهْوَاةٍ أَرْبَعِينَ خَرِيفًا " .

ʿAbdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Every judge who rules among people will come on the Day of Resurrection with an angel holding him by the nape. The angel will raise his head toward the sky, and if the command is given, “Cast him down,” he will be cast into an abyss for forty years.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source uses kharīf, literally an autumn, as a measure of time; it is rendered ‘years’. The speaker who gives the command to cast him down is implicit in the Arabic.

The pronoun in ‘if he says, “Cast him”’ does not explicitly name the speaker; the command’s source is implicit.
