Ziyad ibn Labid reported: The Prophet mentioned something and said, ‘That will happen when knowledge departs.’ I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, how will knowledge depart when we read the Qur’an and teach it to our children, and our children teach it to theirs, generation after generation until the Day of Resurrection?’ He said, ‘May your mother be bereaved of you, Ziyad! I thought you were among the most learned men in Madinah. Do not the Jews and Christians read the Torah and Gospel, yet act on nothing of what is in them?’

Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Islam will wear away as the pattern of a garment wears away, until people no longer know what fasting, prayer, rites, or charity are. The Book of Allah will be taken away in a single night, and not one verse of it will remain on earth. Some groups of people will remain—elderly men and women—who will say, “We found our fathers upon these words: There is no god but Allah, so we say them too.”’ Silah asked him, ‘What good will “There is no god but Allah” do them when they do not know what prayer, fasting, rites, or charity are?’ Hudhayfah turned away from him. Silah repeated the question three times, and each time Hudhayfah turned away. Then, on the third time, he turned to him and said, ‘Silah, it will save them from the Fire’—three times.

‘Abdullah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Before the Hour, there will be days when knowledge is taken away, ignorance descends, and harj becomes widespread.’ Harj means killing.

Hudhayfah reported: The Messenger of Allah told us two reports. I have seen one of them, and I am awaiting the other. He told us: ‘Trustworthiness descended into the very roots of men’s hearts’—al-Tanafisi explained: ‘That is, into the middle of their hearts.’ ‘Then the Qur’an was revealed, and we learned from the Qur’an and from the Sunnah.’ Then he told us about its removal: ‘A man will sleep, and trustworthiness will be taken from his heart, leaving a trace like a faint mark. Then he will sleep again, and trustworthiness will be taken from his heart, leaving a trace like a blister, like an ember rolled over your foot that raises a blister; you see it swollen, but there is nothing inside it.’ Hudhayfah then took a handful of pebbles and rolled them over his shin. He said: ‘People will conduct business with one another, but hardly anyone will fulfill a trust, until it is said, “In such-and-such a clan there is an honest man.” A man will be praised: “How intelligent, strong, and clever he is!” yet there will not be a mustard seed of faith in his heart.’ Hudhayfah added: ‘There was a time when I did not care which of you I dealt with: if he was a Muslim, his Islam would make him return what he owed me; and if he was a Jew or a Christian, his agent would make him return it. But today I would deal only with so-and-so and so-and-so.’’

Ibn ‘Umar reported that the Prophet said: ‘When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, intends to destroy a servant, He removes modesty from him. Then you will find him only loathed and detested. When you find him only loathed and detested, trustworthiness is removed from him. Then you will find him only treacherous and regarded as a traitor. When you find him only treacherous and regarded as a traitor, mercy is removed from him. Then you will find him only rejected and accursed. When you find him only rejected and accursed, the bond of Islam is removed from him.’

Hudhayfah ibn Asid, Abu Surayhah, reported: The Messenger of Allah looked out from a room while we were discussing the Hour. He said: ‘The Hour will not come until there are ten signs: the sun rising from the west; the Dajjal; the smoke; the Beast; Gog and Magog; the emergence of Jesus, son of Mary; three landslides—one in the east, one in the west, and one in the Arabian Peninsula; and a fire emerging from the depths of ‘Adan Abyan that drives people to the place of gathering. It will spend the night with them when they spend the night, and take its midday rest with them when they rest at midday.’

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘Hasten to do good deeds before six things: the sun rises from the west; the smoke; the Beast of the earth; the Dajjal; the personal calamity that may befall one of you; and the public affair.’

Anas ibn Malik reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘My community will pass through five stages. For forty years: people of righteousness and piety. Then those who follow them, until one hundred and twenty years: people of mutual compassion and maintaining ties. Then those who follow them, until one hundred and sixty years: people who turn away from one another and sever ties. Then killing, killing! Seek deliverance, seek deliverance!’ A second chain reports a variant: ‘My community will pass through five stages, each stage lasting forty years. As for my stage and that of my Companions, they are people of knowledge and faith. The second stage, from forty to eighty, consists of people of righteousness and piety.’ The narrator then mentioned the report in similar terms.

Nafi‘ reported: A man came to Ibn ‘Umar and said, ‘So-and-so sends you greetings of peace.’ He replied, ‘I have heard that he has introduced an innovation. If he has done so, do not convey my greetings to him, for I heard the Messenger of Allah say: “There will be among my community—or this community—transformation, the earth swallowing people, and pelting.”’ This concerns the people of al-Qadar.

Hafsah reported that she heard the Messenger of Allah say: ‘An army will set out to attack this House. When they reach a barren plain, the middle of them will be swallowed by the earth. The first will call to the last, then they too will be swallowed, until none remain except a lone survivor who can report what happened to them.’ When al-Hajjaj’s army came, we thought they were the ones meant. A man said, ‘I testify that you have not lied about Hafsah, and Hafsah did not lie about the Prophet.’

Safiyyah reported that the Messenger of Allah said: ‘People will not cease attacking this House until an army sets out against it. When they reach al-Bayda’—or a plain in the land—the first and last of them will be swallowed by the earth, and those in the middle will not be saved.’ I asked, ‘What if there are unwilling people among them?’ He said, ‘Allah will resurrect them according to what was in their hearts.’

Umm Salamah reported: The Prophet mentioned the army that would be swallowed by the earth. She asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, perhaps there will be unwilling people among them?’ He said, ‘They will be resurrected according to their intentions.’
