Umm Salama asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, when he mentioned the lower garment, “What about a woman, Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “She may let it hang a handspan.” She said, “Then her feet will be exposed.” He said, “Then an armspan, but no more.” Malik, Abu Dawud, al-Nasai, and Ibn Majah transmitted it. A version from al-Tirmidhi and al-Nasai, from Ibn Umar, says: She said, “Then their feet will be exposed.” He replied, “Let them extend it by an armspan, but no more.”
