Abu Dharr said: I asked, ‘Messenger of God, who was the first of the prophets?’ He replied, ‘Adam.’ I asked, ‘Was he a prophet?’ He said, ‘Yes, a prophet to whom God spoke.’ I asked, ‘How many are the messengers?’ He replied, ‘Three hundred and a few more than ten, a great multitude.’ In another version from Abu Umamah, Abu Dharr said: I asked, ‘Messenger of God, what is the full number of the prophets?’ He replied, ‘One hundred and twenty-four thousand; among them were three hundred and fifteen messengers, a great multitude.’
