Mishkat al-Masabih 28

Amr ibn al-As reported: I came to the Prophet and said, “Extend your right hand so that I may pledge allegiance to you.” He extended his right hand, but I drew my hand back. He said, “What is the matter with you, Amr?” I said, “I want to make a condition.” He asked, “What condition do you want to make?” I said, “That I be forgiven.” He said, “Do you not know, Amr, that Islam effaces what came before it, the emigration effaces what came before it, and the pilgrimage effaces what came before it?” The two reports narrated from Abu Hurayra are: God Most High said, “I am the least in need of partners among all who are associated with Me,” and, “Grandeur is My cloak.” We will mention these two in the chapters on ostentation and pride, God Most High willing.
