Mishkat al-Masabih 101
Arabic hadith text
وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٌو قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: " إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَلَقَ خَلْقَهُ فِي ظُلْمَةٍ فَأَلْقَى عَلَيْهِمْ مِنْ نُورِهِ فَمَنْ أَصَابَهُ مِنْ ذَلِكَ النُّورِ اهْتَدَى وَمَنْ أَخْطَأَهُ ضَلَّ فَلذَلِك أَقُول: جف الْقلب على علم الله ". رَوَاهُ أَحْمد وَالتِّرْمِذِيّ
Translation
ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr reported: I heard the Messenger of God say, ‘God created His creation in darkness, then cast some of His light upon them. Whoever received some of that light was guided, and whoever missed it went astray. For this reason, I say: “The heart has run dry concerning God’s knowledge.”’ Aḥmad and al-Tirmidhi transmitted it.
