Mishkat al-Masabih 115

Ibn al-Daylamī reported: I went to Ubayy ibn Kaʿb and said to him, ‘I have become troubled by something concerning the divine decree. Tell me something by which, perhaps, God will remove it from my heart.’ He said, ‘If God were to punish the inhabitants of His heavens and His earth, He would punish them without wronging them; and if He showed them mercy, His mercy would be better for them than their deeds. If you were to spend gold equal to Mount Uḥud in God’s cause, God would not accept it from you until you believed in the divine decree and knew that what befell you could not have missed you, and what missed you could not have befallen you. If you died holding otherwise, you would enter the Fire.’ He said: Then I went to ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿud, and he said the same. Then I went to Ḥudhayfa ibn al-Yamān, and he said the same. Then I went to Zayd ibn Thābit, who related to me from the Prophet the same. Aḥmad, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Mājah transmitted it.
