Mishkat al-Masabih 118

Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of God said: ‘When God created Adam, He wiped his back, and every soul from his descendants whom He would create up to the Day of Resurrection fell from his back. He placed a gleam of light between the eyes of each of them, then presented them to Adam. He asked, “My Lord, who are these?” He replied, “These are your descendants.” Adam saw one of them whose gleam between the eyes pleased him and asked, “My Lord, who is this?” He replied, “This is a man from the last of the nations, among your descendants; he is called David.” Adam said, “My Lord, how long have You made his lifespan?” He replied, “Sixty years.” Adam said, “My Lord, add forty years from my lifespan for him.” When Adam’s lifespan had been completed, the Angel of Death came to him. Adam said, “Do I not still have forty years of my life?” He replied, “Did you not give them to your son David?” Adam denied it, and his descendants denied; Adam forgot, and his descendants forgot; Adam erred, and his descendants erred.’ Al-Tirmidhi transmitted it.
