Ibn ʿAbbās reported that the Prophet said: ‘God took the covenant from Adam’s back at Naʿmān—that is, ʿArafa—and brought forth from his loins every descendant He would bring forth. He scattered them before Him like tiny ants, then addressed them directly, saying, “Am I not your Lord?” They said, “Yes indeed; we bear witness”—so that you would not say on the Day of Resurrection, “We were heedless of this,” or say, “Our fathers associated others with God before us, and we were descendants after them. Will You then destroy us for what the falsifiers did?”’ Aḥmad transmitted it.
