Translation

Abu Hurayra reported that the Prophet said: ‘When the deceased reaches the grave, the righteous person sits up in his grave, neither alarmed nor distressed. He is asked, “What were you following?” He replies, “I was following Islam.” He is asked, “Who is this man?” He replies, “Muhammad, the Messenger of God, came to us with clear proofs from God, and we affirmed him as truthful.” He is asked, “Have you seen God?” He replies, “No one ought to see God.” An opening toward the Fire is made for him, and he sees it crashing in upon itself. He is told, “Look at what God has protected you from.” Then an opening toward Paradise is made for him, and he sees its beauty and what it contains. He is told, “This is your place. You were upon certainty, you died upon it, and upon it you will be raised, God willing.”

The wicked person sits up in his grave, frightened and distressed. He is asked, “What were you following?” He replies, “I do not know.” He is asked, “Who is this man?” He replies, “I heard people saying something, so I repeated it.” An opening toward Paradise is made for him, and he sees its beauty and what it contains. He is told, “Look at what God has turned away from you.” Then an opening toward the Fire is made for him, and he sees it crashing in upon itself. He is told, “This is your place. You were in doubt, you died upon it, and upon it you will be raised, God willing, exalted is He.” Ibn Mājah transmitted it.
