Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of God said: ‘My likeness and the likeness of people is that of a man who kindled a fire. When it lit up what was around him, moths and other creatures that fall into fire began falling into it. He tried to hold them back, but they overpowered him and plunged into it. I am holding you by your waistbands to keep you from the Fire, while you plunge into it.’ This is al-Bukhari’s version. Muslim has a similar version, which ends: ‘That is my likeness and yours: I am holding you by your waistbands to keep you from the Fire. Come away from the Fire! Come away from the Fire! Yet you overpower me and plunge into it.’
