Al-ʿIrbāḍ reported: One day the Messenger of God led us in prayer, then turned toward us and gave us a profound exhortation that brought tears to our eyes and made our hearts tremble. A man said, ‘Messenger of God, this sounds like a farewell sermon; so counsel us.’ He said, ‘I counsel you to fear God and to listen and obey, even if [your leader] is an Abyssinian slave. Whoever among you lives on after me will see much disagreement. You must follow my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs. Hold fast to them and cling to them with your molar teeth. Beware of newly introduced matters, for every newly introduced matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance.’ Aḥmad, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Mājah transmitted it, though al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Mājah do not mention the prayer.
