Abu Hurayra reported that the Messenger of God said: ‘The Qur’an was sent down in five forms: the lawful, the unlawful, what is decisive, what is ambiguous, and parables. So deem the lawful lawful and the unlawful unlawful; act upon what is decisive; believe in what is ambiguous; and take heed from the parables.’ This is the wording of al-Maṣābīḥ. Al-Bayhaqī transmitted it in Shuʿab al-Īmān with this wording: ‘Act according to what is lawful, avoid what is unlawful, and follow what is decisive.’
