‘A'isha said that God’s messenger used to exert himself in devotion during the last ten nights to a greater extent than at any other time.Muslim transmitted it.
The Excellence of the Last Ten Nights
This narration from the Mother of the Believers, 'A'isha (may Allah be pleased with her), reveals the Prophet's intensified worship during the final ten nights of Ramadan. The phrase "exert himself in devotion" (yajtahidu) indicates complete physical and spiritual engagement in prayer, Quran recitation, remembrance of Allah, and seeking forgiveness.
Scholarly Commentary on Increased Devotion
Imam al-Nawawi explains that this exertion included staying awake at night, awakening his family for prayer, and abstaining from worldly pleasures. The Prophet would tighten his waistcloth as a symbol of detachment from worldly matters.
Scholars note that this special effort was made seeking Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Decree), which is better than a thousand months of worship. The Prophet's example teaches us to increase our devotion particularly during these blessed nights.
Practical Applications
This hadith encourages Muslims to intensify worship during the last ten nights through additional prayers, Quran recitation, supplication, and charitable deeds. It is recommended to perform i'tikaf (spiritual retreat) in the mosque during this period if possible.
The collective wisdom of scholars advises seeking Laylat al-Qadr particularly on the odd-numbered nights (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th) of Ramadan, following the Prophet's guidance and practice.
