In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon His final Messenger.

The Prohibition and Its Wisdom

This noble hadith, transmitted by Imam Daraqutni, contains a severe prohibition against using vessels of gold and silver for drinking. The phrase "or one containing something of that nature" includes vessels that are plated or partially made of these precious metals.

The wisdom behind this prohibition lies in preventing extravagance, ostentation, and the imitation of arrogant rulers and non-Muslim nations who flaunt their wealth. Such behavior contradicts the Islamic principles of humility and moderation.

The Severe Warning

The threat of "the fire of jahannam will bubble in his belly" is a metaphorical expression indicating the severity of this sin. It serves as a powerful deterrent, showing that this act is not merely disliked but constitutes a major sin that may lead to eternal punishment.

This vivid imagery emphasizes how the unlawful enjoyment in this world transforms into divine punishment in the hereafter. The belly, being the receptacle for what was consumed, becomes the site of punishment for what was unlawfully acquired.

Scholarly Consensus and Application

The majority of scholars agree that using gold and silver vessels for eating and drinking is strictly prohibited (haram). This prohibition extends to all forms of consumption vessels, including cups, plates, and utensils.

However, scholars have permitted the use of silver for medical necessity or for repairing broken pottery. The prohibition primarily concerns vessels meant for regular use that promote extravagance and pride.

Spiritual Lessons

This teaching reminds believers to maintain simplicity in their lifestyle and avoid unnecessary luxury that may lead to arrogance. The Prophet (peace be upon him) himself used earthenware, wooden, and leather vessels, setting the example of modesty for his ummah.

May Allah protect us from acts that incur His displeasure and grant us the understanding to implement His guidance in all aspects of our lives. And Allah knows best.
