"Nigella seed is a remedy for every disease but sam." Ibn Shihab said sam is death and the nigella seed is shuniz. (Bukhari and Muslim.)

Commentary on the Prophetic Remedy

This noble hadith establishes the comprehensive healing properties of black seed (nigella sativa) as affirmed by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The exception "but sam" refers to death itself, indicating that while this blessed seed possesses curative properties for all ailments, it cannot prevent the appointed time of death decreed by Allah.

The clarification by Ibn Shihab that "sam" means death reinforces the understanding that only Allah controls life and death. The term "shuniz" mentioned is of Persian origin, demonstrating how Islamic tradition incorporates beneficial knowledge from various cultures while maintaining theological purity.

Scholars have interpreted this hadith as encouraging the use of natural remedies while recognizing that ultimate healing comes from Allah. The black seed serves as a means (asbab) through which divine cure may manifest, but the believer's trust remains firmly in the Creator rather than the creation.
