Muadh ibn Jabal reported that during the Tabuk expedition, if the sun had passed its zenith before the Prophet set out, he combined the noon and afternoon prayers. If he set out before the sun passed its zenith, he delayed the noon prayer until he stopped for the afternoon prayer. He did the same with the sunset and night prayers: if the sun had set before he set out, he combined them; if he set out before sunset, he delayed the sunset prayer until he stopped for the night prayer, then combined them. Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi transmitted it.
