Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of God said: Whoever performs ablution well, comes to Friday prayer, listens and remains silent, will be forgiven for the time until the next Friday and an additional three days. Whoever touches pebbles has engaged in idle action. Muslim transmitted it.

وَمَنْ مَسَّ الْحَصَى فقد لَغَا
The verb لغا can indicate idle or vain speech or action; the Arabic does not explain why the pebbles are touched.
Should this be translated as idle action or as distracting oneself by handling pebbles?
