‘Amr ibn ‘Abasah reported: After the Prophet (peace be upon him) came to Medina, I came there and visited him. I said: ‘Tell me about prayer.’ He replied: ‘Pray the dawn prayer, then refrain from prayer while the sun is rising until it is fully elevated, for it rises between Satan’s horns, and at that time the unbelievers prostrate to it. Then pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended, until the shadow stands apart by the spear. Then refrain from prayer, for at that time Hell is stoked. When the shadow advances again, pray, for the prayer is witnessed and attended, until you pray the afternoon prayer. Then refrain from prayer until the sun sets, for it sets between Satan’s horns, and at that time the unbelievers prostrate to it.’ I then said: ‘O Prophet of God, tell me about ablution.’ He replied: ‘When anyone among you prepares water for ablution, rinses his mouth, draws water into his nose and expels it, the sins of his face, mouth, and nostrils fall away. When he washes his face as God commanded, the sins of his face fall from the ends of his beard with the water. When he washes his arms up to the elbows, the sins of his hands fall from his fingertips with the water. When he wipes his head, the sins of his head fall from the ends of his hair with the water. When he washes his feet up to the ankles, the sins of his feet fall from his toes with the water. Then, if he stands and prays, praises God, extols Him, and glorifies Him as He deserves, and devotes his heart wholly to God, he leaves his sins behind, as on the day his mother gave birth to him.’ Muslim transmitted it.

The Arabic phrase حتى يستقل الظل بالرمح describes a point in the sun’s course by reference to a spear and its shadow; its precise physical threshold is terse.

Should this threshold be rendered more explicitly after checking a reliable commentary or recension?
