Kuraib reported: Ibn ‘Abbas, al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, and ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Azhar sent me to ‘A’ishah, asking that I greet her and ask about the two rak‘ahs after the afternoon prayer. I went to her and conveyed their message. She said: ‘Ask Umm Salamah.’ I went out to them, and they sent me back to Umm Salamah. Umm Salamah (may God be pleased with her) said: I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) forbid those two rak‘ahs, then later saw him pray them. After he entered, I sent a young woman to him and said: ‘Tell him: Umm Salamah says, “O Messenger of God, I heard you forbid these two, yet I see you praying them.”’ He replied: ‘Daughter of Abu Umayyah, you asked about the two rak‘ahs after the afternoon prayer. Some people of ‘Abd al-Qays came to me and distracted me from the two rak‘ahs after the noon prayer; these are those two.’

The English witness adds a footnote identifying Abu Umayyah as Umm Salamah’s father and explaining that the reply is phrased as direct address despite being relayed by a servant; this note is absent from Arabic.
Should the witness-only explanatory note be kept separately?
