Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī was asked what the pulpit was made of. He replied that it was made of tamarisk from al-Ghābah, by so-and-so, the client of such-and-such a woman, for the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him. When it had been made and set in place, the Messenger of God stood upon it, faced the qiblah, and said the opening takbīr. The people stood behind him. He recited, bowed, and the people behind him bowed. Then he raised his head, stepped backward, and prostrated on the ground. Then he returned to the pulpit, recited, bowed, and raised his head. Then he stepped backward and went on until he prostrated on the ground. This is the wording of al-Bukhārī. In the version agreed upon by al-Bukhārī and Muslim there is something similar, and at its end it says that when he had finished, he turned to the people and said: O people, I did this only so that you would follow me and learn my prayer.
