Umar, may God be pleased with him, said: I heard the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, say: Four rakahs before the noon prayer, after the sun has passed its zenith, are counted as equivalent to the same number in the pre-dawn prayer. There is nothing that does not glorify God at that hour. Then he recited: Their shadows incline to the right and to the left, prostrating to God while they are humbled. Al-Tirmidhi and al-Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shuab al-Iman.

The phrase صلاة السحر can refer to prayer in the pre-dawn hours; the exact ritual scope is not specified in the Arabic passage.

Should صلاة السحر remain a general reference to prayer in the pre-dawn hours, or is a narrower interpretation supported by an additional source?
